About that Jubilee Year… There is no Biblical evidence and no external evidence that the Israelites ever celebrated a Jubilee Year. Still, the LORD instituted it and the reality of His plan fascinates me. We live in a world with pockets of intense poverty. Income and wealth distributions across the world and within the United states are horribly skewed in a direction of a few people hold enormous percentages of both income and wealth. The Year of Jubilee was, it seems to me, in part designed to create a certain amount of equality across all Israelites. We will soon see in the book of Joshua the division of the Promised Land to the twelve tribes and then further to the members of those tribes. In the Year of Jubilee, no matter what had happened in that 49-year span prior to the Jubilee Year, the land was to return to its original owner (or his descendants). That is, no one Israelite would ever be able to become a super-wealthy, monopolistic landowner; land ownership, eternally deeded by God guaranteed that. Fascinating! But did it ever occur? Not likely. And look where we are today…!
