Romans 4:16-25

Dear RTB’ers,

More history and theology today, with Paul (seemingly, to me) repeating his few main points. A different item popped out to me, however – the words “faith” and “grace” in the same sentence: That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring… (v. 16). How common is it that faith and grace appear in the same sentence? Probably the most famous Bible verse where they appear together is Ephesians 2:8a: For  by grace you have been saved through faith. I will leave it to you to look up the rest of that verse, plus Ephesians 2:9 since people typically quote 8 and 9 together. And while you’re at it, give a look to Ephesians 2:10 also, which tends to get ignored when people quote Ephesians 2:8-9. Interesting!

Sorry, folks, nothing earth-shattering today!

Blessings!

  1. Nothing earth-shattering today? How about this?

But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in Him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, Who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
    Romans 4:23-25

Previously in Romans 4:3 Paul quoted Genesis 15:6: “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” The notion that our faith might likewise be counted to us as righteousness is most certainly earth-shattering for each one of us. Jesus was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. That’s Good News!

We might already be familiar with some of these ideas, but let’s not let that familiarity dampen the wonder of being justified — counted righteous, “just as if I’d” never sinned. That’s awesome!

    1. Good comment, John, a really good everyday reminder.

My “nothing earth-shattering” comment had to do with my own post, meaning that there was nothing very special in what I had said. Frankly, I had to get to the office early today and did not take as much time with RTB as I normally would (or should). Sorry, folks, but that’s the nature of being the lead post. And if I miss something special, as John posted, I’m more than happy to hear a comment from a couple of you. John and I have said, over and over, we love to hear from you!!

      Blessings!
