  1. John asked what verses stand out to us in these passages…

In Job 21, where Job is answering Zophar, these verses caught my attention:
“They say to God, ‘Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of Thy ways. What is the Almighty, that we should serve Him? And what profit do we get if we pray to Him?’” (Job 21:14-15 RSV)

Aside from the astonishing rejection of God and His ways is the desire for profit from a relationship with Him. I think this attitude pervades society today. If there isn’t any financial or personal benefit from following traditional values, then it’s okay to bend the rules—on personal desires, tax returns, etc.—or simply ignore them altogether.
